  • Yoga Sanctuary 100 W 46th St. Minneapolis, MN, 55419 United States (map)

Life is ruled by invisible forces. When the wind blows we cannot hold it in our hands — yet we feel it touch our skin, see it move the tree branches. Energy is the same. It is intangible — yet we experience it, as it animates every part of our being, from our movements to our heartbeat to our thoughts.

In ancient Chinese wisdom, each season is associated with specific physical, mental/emotional and spiritual energies. Like the ocean’s tide – where we can more easily catch a wave during high tide – the Five Elements philosophy is founded on the idea that each year, we are provided an opportunity to heal (the associated physical, mental/emotion and/or spiritual malady) when the seasonally-based energetic access point emerges and opens.

Spring is associated with the Wood element and the liver and gallbladder organs; and thus, affects our ability to digest, detoxify and eliminate. Mentally/emotionally, Spring provides the opportunity for birth, growth, regeneration and forward movement toward a future goal or aspiration. Spiritually, Spring allows up to act in a manner that is deeply aligned with purpose and direction. Without a strong connection to purpose, we may begin to feel hopeless or desperate, with no perceived direction.

Qi Gong is the practice of moving life force energy (qi) via cultivated physical movement (gong). it is considered the ancient root (before recorded history) of all TCM practices and many branches of Qi Gong have developed over 5000 years.

Sound meditation is an immersive listening experience using intention and sound to clear dissonance and invite in a more peaceful, resonant state of being. For centuries, sound has been utilized by cultures around the world to bring balance and healing to the body, mind and spirit. Sound meditation utilizes specific instruments, music, tones, and other sonic vibrations. Although there is limited clinical research, recent studies have demonstrated statistically significant outcomes of stress reduction, elevated mood, decreased tension and improved spiritual wellbeing.

The class begins with a 20-minute Qi practice. Participants then settle into a lying position for a brief guided visualization. The remainder of class is filled with meditative sound from crystal singing bowls, gong, drums, chimes and/or voice.
